STEP 15 – WHY SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS

broken image

Sourcing Essential Oils in a SUSTAINABLE way is an important part of the process if we are to have these precious gifts of the earth for future generations to use.

Essential Oils are steam distilled from plant parts or cold pressed from fruit rinds, but not all parts of the plant are used. It’s not a matter of picking a handful of flowers and obtaining a bottle of oil. It takes A LOT of plant material to yield a small amount of Essential Oil.

For example:

• A 15 ml bottle of Lemon Essential Oil requires 50 lemons.

• A 15 ml bottle of Lavender Essential Oil requires three pounds of plant material.

• A 5 ml bottle of Rose Essential Oil requires more than 242,000 rose petals!

The issue of SUSTAINABILITY is becoming more and more important as Essential Oil use becomes more popular. It’s great that more people are turning to natural solutions for their health and wellness needs, but as these resources are more heavily drawn upon, it’s becoming vital to know that the company you purchase oils from takes measures to make sure they are harvesting plants in SUSTAINABLE ways.

It’s disheartening to hear that some companies disregard regulations aimed at ensuring SUSTAINABLE harvesting. In order to do your part to make sure these amazing plants do not become extinct, consider only purchasing oils through companies like ours that are committed to SUSTAINABLE practices.

QUESTION – DID THE AMOUNT OF PLANT MATERIAL NEEDED TO YIELD A BOTTLE OF ESSENTIAL OIL SURPRISE YOU?
